Sri Lanka being a developing country, its traffic congestions are becoming severe day by day because of the population and the economic background. To overcome the congestions, traffic controlling light systems are introduced for most of the junctions. The existing traffic controlling light system is based on a fixed cycle times for each signal phase and they depend on environmental conditions, geometry design and traffic movements of the particular junction. Among the most of the designs mentioned above, the geometry design called “Right-Turn Bay” is an extra segment of lane which was introduced to the waiting vehicles that are supposed to turn into right-side at the intersection. Because of the limited area of that lane segment, it can be overflown within few seconds for busy hours. The solution proposed in this paper is to overcome the overflowing problem in the Right-turn bay by giving an extra cycle time period for the right turnings at busy times. For the real-time process, the arrival of vehicles was detected at the bay by a video camera and the vehicle counting was gathered using “pixel-wise segmentation” and “blob tracking” of the vehicles with the aid of Image Processing Techniques. The existing system is needed an additional functionality to control light system of the junction with respect to a threshold value of the count at the right-turn bay. Finally, the signal controller parameters are used to consolidate the clearance of vehicles in the right-turn bay. |
